Death of a Radical

by Rebecca Jenkins

1812. Bored with the mundane commitments of his new role as the Duke of Penrith's agent in the town of Woolbridge in Durham, returning soldier Raif Jarrett is having second thoughts about civilian life. The local mills are bringing in machinery and a group of radicals are protesting the plight of the workers.  As the Easter fairs approach and the town readies itself for upheaval, one of the Magistrates brings in the military as a precaution.   It seems Woolbridge is headed for trouble.   Then Raif's young cousin comes to stay and gets involved.   Soon enough a salesman lies dead in his bed and a radical is brutally murdered out on the hillside. Raif is forced to act to keep his family safe and his town intact.

‘To some degree, the Quercus imprimatur is a guarantee of quality for any novel, but this is particularly true of the publisher's outings in the crime field, and Rebecca Jenkins' beguiling Death of a Radical can definitely be counted among the most authoritative additions to their list. …With its strikingly characterised hero (whom readers have encountered in The Duke's Agent) and a vividly realised sense of the period, this is historical crime writing of some flair.’        Barry Forshaw, editor Crime Time

“Captivating…Establishes [Jenkins] as one of today’s leading writers of historical whodunits.’     Publishers Weekly
